| S.S.C.,
H.S.C. What next? Why career talk or guidance |
After S.S.C. and H.S.C.
it is seen that both parents as well as students are confused as to which
stream of education should the child pursue?
It has been a general
practice especially amongst us- Muslims, to send a child to college either
because our relatives, neighbors or friends are doing so. They cannot
decide which college to join, or which course to select. They just follow
whatever a majority group does, without taking into account the child's
capacity, attitude or inclination, or the scope of that particulars course.
Is such an approach
right? Are all individuals alike? Should we blindly join a particular
stream just without understanding its demands and results? Its seen that
many Memon and Muslim graduates are running from pillar to post for a
job only because either they had related the wrong stream of study at
the college level, or they had related wrong combination of subjects at
the graduation level and had came to a dead end from where they could
neither go back or plunge forward.
It's seen that many
well taught men who have graduated from at least two streams and were
still humbling what to do further, so naturally they either join their
family business or were frustrated with the education system itself. Can
we call such people wise? Have they done justice to the educational system
by blocking one of the seats for one of the courses where someone else
would have benefited for more than our learned friend, Hence, before taking
this major decision, either after S.S.C. or H.S.C. an honest self-analysis
of the students should be done both the students as well as the parents
and some testing (Aptitude test) and counseling be done from the right
sources, before finalizing, because result alone or percentage at the
Board Exams is not the only criteria for joining a particular stream.
You may wonder what
is self analysis and how is it done. The following factors play a major
role in self-analysis or self -evaluation.
1. Educational interest:
The final board exams are not that all and end all to gauge the student's
intelligence level or mental skills. The student's progress through the
school-life, the student's performance at various stages i.e. primary,
upper primary and after that at the high school stage tell a lot about
the student's capabilities and his drawbacks, his capacity at different
levels. They also point out his favorite subjects, his special likes,
his inclination towards extracurricular activities like Sports, Music,
Social Work N.C.C. and Fine Arts.
Generally parents
feel that activities like sports, N.C.C., Drawing and Music have no significance
in the educational system and are a shell waste of time. In actuality
it is not so, because certain courses demand minimum government Elementary
Exam Certificate. Certain courses give, 3 credit marks to sports persons
when taking overall marks into account during admission. So, why should
we deprive our children of these facilities if they are capable to participate
in them.
2. Intelligence &
Ability:
Does the students grasp the information imparted spontaneously and can
be retain that information, or just forget it after sometime i.e. does
he possess the grasping and retaining power? Does he have the stamina
to face the challenges that come in his way while taking education? Does
he have the determination to reach his goal fighting against all odds?
or does he give up easily? This is the second major factor to be taken
into account.
3. Personality:
The student should have a personality that befits the course he wants
to join. He should have self confidence, poise, and a sociable nature
and can communicate freely with those he is working should have a pleasant
way of conversing and getting his doubts cleaned about the subject at
hand, and have the right attitude towards the work he opts to select.
4. Ambitions and Expectations:
By taking a particular course, both the parent and the student should
realize that as par the efforts put in by the students, a particular target
should be reached a certain expectation fulfilled. But this fact should
be done in mind, that others are working equally hard in he some field,
with so much of competitive are, we may be one of the BEST, if not the
VERY BEST, such an attitude will not allow frustration to set in.
5. Health and Physical
Fitness:
A good amount of fitness is required to bear the stress and strain involved
in the completion of a particular course of interest.
6. Family Background:
It is one of the most important pillars on which the framework for a particular
course in education rests: (a) the atmosphere at home should be congenial
and conducive to studies. (b) the financial positions of the family should
be such that it can bear the expenses or arrange the finances to bear
the educational expenses for the 'course, (c) These should be moral boost
encouragement and support from the family members for the course taken.
Times to time parental guidance makes the pursuance of studies are enjoyable
experience.
7. The course of choice:
After having analyzed one's self on the above mentioned six factors, now
comes the taste of choosing a career. A thorough inquiry regarding the
theory & practical curriculum of the course should be done. A know
how of the competition and saturation in the particular field and its
challenges should be understood. The finances required for establishing
oneself after completion of the course and the job opportunities available
should be ascertained.
After following the
above mentioned procedure fully, selection of a particular course may
not be difficult. Yet it some doubts persist a proper guidance in this
respect can be had from:
The Counseling Centre
or
The Vocational Guidance Bureau.
