Organisations and Jamaats in India

As the ancestral home of the Memon community, India hosts some of the oldest and most venerable Jamaats. These institutions have evolved over centuries from trade guilds into sophisticated welfare organisations that serve not just Memons, but the broader Indian society.

Role of Indian Jamaats

Indian Jamaats are deeply integrated into the social fabric. They focus heavily on education, managing numerous schools and colleges. Housing societies (baghs) are another major contribution, providing affordable living spaces in expensive cities like Mumbai. Their charitable trusts operate hospitals that offer subsidised care to millions.

Major Locations

Mumbai hosts the headquarters for many apex bodies, with historic community halls and masjids in areas like Mohammed Ali Road and Bandra. Cities in Gujarat — Surat, Rajkot, and Jamnagar — host powerful local Jamaats. Kutch, the original homeland, has Jamaats maintaining heritage sites and supporting local infrastructure.

Community Strength

The strength of Indian organisations lies in their endowment assets (Waqf). Many trusts own significant real estate, the income from which funds scholarships, medical aid, and widow support programs, ensuring long-term sustainability of welfare projects.
